I really liked Caile's view that the Tent Occupiers in Vancouver are ahead of their time. While many of the people walking by them might be tempted to extend a middle finger and shout - "Occupy this, you out-of-work, canvas-housed, ranting street parasite!" - others take the position that there is something wrong with a global market system where the very rich get bailed out of financial difficulty and the very poor get hosed, literally and figuratively. The bankers and stock brokers are still getting salaries and imaginative benefits like options while the average person who is out of work knows that she may never find work, or at least work beyond a trinket-like wage. Our current governments both provincially and federally have worked hard to reduce taxes for big corporations and fat cat managers but cared little about the people marginalized by an $8 minimum wage or no job at all. I think the death of Jack Layton sounded a death knell for progressive governmental change federally for some time, but little by little the heroes in the seaweed of grassroots activism will continue to make the world more egalitarian and hence better.
