As a consistent user of our electronic entertainment, I have seen from an inside perspective the effects a certain video game, or even an obsession with gaming, can have on people. Primarily, how I see it, video games are used as a way to escape from life and its distractions or problems.
However, some people allow it to become associated with how they perceive life. Not saying that because somebody is playing a shooting game they will go out and shoot up a school or business, just that the game consumes them.
This in the sense that they don't want to go out and face reality because they can be somebody much more intimidating, entertaining, lovable, etc. in a certain game. It gives them an illusion that because they are controlling this character, it is them in some way.
The line between reality and fantasy becomes extremely dim and they would rather live in this delusional life where they can become whoever they choose to be. It's usually the loner or insecure type of person that becomes so easily entranced with this glorified alter ego, but that is just the majority. Everybody at some point wishes they could live a different life and this is the most convenient way to do so. If you can handle this power in moderation it is a very exciting and satisfying release from the petty daily tasks that we must endure.
So when it comes down to it, it all depends on your will power and overall, how content you are with yourself as a person and whether or not you acknowledge the boundaries between reality and fantasy.
Why do you think people play video games? Why do you think some people become so obsessed with it? Let me know your opinions..
